What Is the EU Blue Card
The EU Blue Card (Niebieska Karta UE) is a temporary residence permit in Poland for highly qualified professionals. It lets you both live and work in Poland in a job that requires higher education or high professional qualifications.
Legal basis: Article 127 of the Act of 12 December 2013 on Foreigners (ustawa o cudzoziemcach), as amended with effect from 1 June 2025.
The main difference between the Blue Card and a standard work-based residence permit is broader labour market rights: you can change employers freely, move within the EU, and reach EU long-term resident status faster.

Your salary must be at least 150% of the average national salary for the previous year.
According to GUS (Statistics Poland), the average salary in 2025 was PLN 8,903.56 gross. The Blue Card threshold for 2026 is therefore:
Year | Average salary (previous year) | Blue Card threshold (150%) |
2025 | PLN 8,181.72 | PLN 12,272.58 gross/month |
2026 | PLN 8,903.56 | PLN 13,355.34 gross/month |

How Long the Card Is Valid
The Blue Card is issued for:
the duration of your contract;
plus 3 months;
up to a maximum of 3 years.
You can renew it as long as you continue to meet the requirements.
Can You Change Employers?
Yes. Since 1 June 2025, the rules are much simpler:
you don’t need a new decision from the voivode when you change employers;
you only need to notify the voivode in writing within 15 working days;
the new job must still require high qualifications, and the salary must still meet the threshold.
Changes to your working hours or salary create no extra obligations, as long as your pay stays above the minimum set in the decision.
What to Do If You Lose Your Job
As a Blue Card holder, you must:
notify the voivode within 15 working days;
actively look for a new job that meets the Blue Card requirements.
Your card is not revoked immediately. The law gives you time to find new work:
Time on the Blue Card | Time to find a new job |
Less than 2 years | 3 months |
2 years or more | 6 months |

Grounds for Refusal
The voivode may refuse your application if:
you can’t prove high qualifications;
your salary is below the threshold;
you don’t have health insurance;
you submitted false documents or information;
the job doesn’t qualify as highly skilled work.
Most refusals stem from errors in the contract or qualification documents, and these can be prevented at the preparation stage.
Benefits of the EU Blue Card
✅ Residence and work in one document. No separate work permit (zezwolenie na pracę) is needed.
✅ Free choice of employer. You only need to notify the voivode.
✅ A protection period if you lose your job: 3 or 6 months.
✅ Mobility within the EU. Business trips to other EU countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and after 12 months in Poland, the option to move and work in another EU country under a simplified procedure.
✅ Combined residence periods for EU long-term resident status. Time spent on a Blue Card in different EU countries can count together — for example, 2 years in Germany plus 3 years in Poland. The condition is that the most recent years before applying are spent in Poland on a Blue Card.
✅ Simplified family reunification.
✅ Prestigious status. For employers, a Blue Card signals that the employee is highly qualified and earns above the market average.
The Blue Card and Your Family
Who can join the cardholder
a spouse;
minor children;
in some cases, other close relatives (on separate legal grounds).
What your family gets
✅ Residence permits on the basis of family reunification.
✅ Your spouse can work in Poland without a separate work permit.
✅ Your children can attend Polish nurseries and schools on equal terms.
✅ Later on, your family can apply for long-term residence statuses if they meet the legal requirements.

A software developer receives a Blue Card for 3 years:
his wife applies for a residence permit for family reunification;
the children receive residence cards as family members;
